looking into getting a '58 jag mk1, never really owned a classic before but like most people I've always been fascinated by Jaguars. A few questions:

the price is £17500, is this OK?

what is the insurace likely to be (i have 6 years no claims)?

when i view the car is there anything specific i should check for?

Hi goldeneye

Id strongly recommend you getting someone who knows their old Jags to check it over, if you've not dabbled with classics before. For £17500 it would have to be in Very good nick, so don't accept any flawed paintwork or rusty bits (probably won't have any, but pays to check). It would be very worthwhile getting a book, so that you know exactly what parts should/should not be fitted, as there are plenty of Mk1/2 Jags with incorrect engines, upgraded parts fitted and so on, so with the right information, you can assess what you're looking at. Not all that glistens is gold, and all that

You should be able to get it on a separate limited mileage policy for a couple of hundred quid, if you're over 25!

What to check? again do your research - but rust, wonky trim, tired mechanicals are all things to avoid if spending that much on a Jaguar.

I have found one company that does classic limited millage policys for under 25's, can't remember which one it is, but it is written down somewhere, if anyone knows of any others I would apriciate you sharing it with me. all of the companies I have aproached say that "untill you are 25 you don't own classic vehicles", clearly this is wrong I I do!

I'm going to see it in two weeks so I'll try and find someone to come with me. There's a couple of small garages in my area that I've used quite a bit, maybe someone there would be interested in a day out! All beers on me of course (after they've looked at the car!)

As for insurance, best I've found so far is £236 with Lancaster on this website http://www.moneysupermarket.com/motor/. Cant find bette than that so far but I'm pretty happy with under £250. Sadly I am way over 25 but in this case its probably worth it

Sorry Rick, forgot to ask are there any specific books you would recommend? No problem if there aren't I can just have a look round but if you know any really informative ones it might save me a bit of time

Not offhand but a search on Amazon might bring up something good! if you can't find anything on the original 3.4 (retrospectively known as the Mk1), a buyers guide for the Mk2 should highlight most of the common weaknesses!
