|
|
Morris J types were fitted with Triplex glass.
There is a way of dating the glass from the etched ID mark on it. Somthing to do with a small dot that appears above the word Triplex. Depending upon which letter it is over tells the date of manufacture (of the glass), or so the story goes.
Does anyone know how this works, and if there is any meaning to the other markings in that ID etching?
Regards all,
Mike |

Easy one this....
The dot will appear over either the T, R, E, or X in the word Triplex. This gives you the part of the year it was made, ie the Jan-March, Apr- June, July-Sept., Oct.-Dec.
Under the word Toughened is another dot. This gives the year, unless of course, there is no dot, then the year is '0'
So if your vehicle is from say, April 1947, there will be a dot under the 'r' in triplex, and the 'N' in toughened.....

I cant figure out how you can understand the year of manufacture?
Is there a time span like for example the letter t of toughned from 1920-1925 and so on? |

Triplex work in decades. The word toughened has 9 letters, t=1, o=2, and so on. The tenth year of the decade (0) doesnt have a dot.
if you had a dot under the letter 't' for example, the year could be 51, 61, and so on...but of course, you get the decade from the cars year of manufacture.
If you own say a 1961 Mini, then new glass bought in 1971 should have the same markings....
I wonder if anyone else can shed a bit of light on this...

If you let me know the year of one of your cars, then I can use it as an example, if it helps you understand better.

Yes, thats correct. In the case of a car from 1976, there should be a dot near the first 'e' in toughened.
Dont forget though that this only dates the glass. A car made early 76 could have the dot near the 'h'.....in that case though, there would possibly be a dot near the 'x' in triplex (last part of 75)

After something that I was told earlier this week by another forum member, I doubt if I am one of the elders of this forum any more...
One thing that I have been thinking about though, and it wouldnt surprise me if some others have thought this, is just how to transfer some of the automotive knowledge I have to some of the youngsters on this forum...any ideas anyone?
