Another one from my postcard collection: How would you like to have a military convoy stop outside your gate while they made "minor" repairs to the staff car. Just look at the size of the hammer the guy on the right is wielding?

Great period photo pigtin, but what exactly the tool he's holding? I always thought it was a 'Birmingham screwdriver' but at the weekend I saw it referred to as a 'Liverpool socket set'. Any further suggestions?

Idyllic days indeed. But on the other side of the coin, if you cut and infected your finger, in those days before penicillin, you could be dead within a week.  |
