Does any one out there know the MOT regs for front indicators in terms of colour?

I can get all white front lenses for my 1970 Volvo Amazon that look a lot nicer than the orange/white lenses currently fitted. Do I need to fit orange bulbs behind or can I have white flashers?

I have tried to work my way through the Construction and Use Regulations but can see nothing about the colour of front indicators.

I always thought the general rule was if your car was fitted with clear indicators (early 60's back) then that was it . But in view of what modern cars have I think a lot depends on who does your mot's , probably best to speak to them as they are the ones who will pass or fail .

Hi Brian

Some modern cars have clear looking lenses but flash amber when they fire up (I think my V70 is like that), so as long as the bulbs are orange I shouldn't think it matter what colour the lenses themselves are.

The general rule for MOT' s is that vehicle’s equipment is tested to the standard to be expected during its year of manufacture for a UK spec car, so if your indicators were originally clear, this is ok.

The dipping system on my 1939 Morris dips the nearside headlamp and puts the off side out completely! would fail any modern car but on my Morris its fine.

The only change (I am aware of) that was enforced irrespective of a cars age, was the requirement for windscreen washers on cars without an opening windscreen.

UK, I know that this is going off topic a little, but I assume that your 'dip ' headlight is the same that used to be on the Austin 12 I once had, ie the whole reflector moves when you switch on high beam. Is that correct?

UJ, yes its the same, a solenoid tilts the nearside reflector.

The odd thing is that the this was the spec for only the UK cars, all the "Export" models had dual fillament bulbs on both sides!
