News of another old van that needs identifying, and ideally rescuing:
------------------------
"I have bought the what was the old post office in Newton Green, Suffolk.
There are lots of cobbled together outbuildings made for storage - part of which
is an old caravan. It has no makers name that I can see but I thought that
your members might be interested in identifying it and/or taking it on as a
restoration project.
There is a plate by the door, that I think is the retailers mark, which
says: A.S. Jenkinson Caravans, 80 Oxford Street, London W1. Tel. Langham 5606 - 7.
The caravan is in a pretty sorry state but has some interesting original
features such as the original sink and plug and glass gas mantles."

My first thought was a Bluebird, then a Paladin (?). |

Doh!
If it is I hang my head in shame, I had it in mind that Berkeleys of that age had "diagonal stripes" pressed into the aluminium panels. They were made a few miles from me, and we had a Cavalier as well! |

Well ! that serves me right for not making a positive i.d. on the van. the body shape of this van was very popular in the fiftys and looking through my books the nearest i can find is a marsten .But going back to berkeley they started in around 1947 with the baronet, and through the 1950s produced a wide range of caravans from tourers to statics.
Your Cavailer came along in the late fiftys and the diagonal bands on the sides where just a fashion thing, that was in at the time, i.e. fairhome who were copiyed by bluebird and penguin to name just a few.
so most of the berkeleys up until the late 50s had stright sides, it was a big old range of vans and when i can get my head round posting pics on this forum i will put some berkleys on. |
