Hi there
well its not quite a classic, but in just over a year it will be 25 years old and tax exempt!
bought it as a basket case in 2004 in bits of about 15 boxes, got it together and passed the MOT.
Its a Japanese XZ550 V twin. Not many around in the Uk, Ive never seen another except one being broken on Ebay. There seems to be a following of them in the States though.
She needs constant looking after and sadly is kept outside all year under only a cover.
Just an intro before I ask questions!
Regards.

Hi
I believe that the 25yr thing no longer works, it was frozen in time in the Autumn Budget 1997 by Gordon.
Quote: | Old vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 (historic vehicles)
If your vehicle was constructed before 1 January 1973, you could tax it in the 'historic vehicle' tax class. Further information can be found on leaflet INF34.

I think that apart from the taxation issue a bike becomes a 'classic' because of what it is rather than age, and yours is certainly a rarity.
Having said that my tip for the next big 'classic' to go up in value is the humble and ubiquitous BMW boxer twin.
Those of us old enough to remember the heyday of the British twins from Triumph and BSA will know that in the mid to late '70's you couldn't give them away so antiquated had they become by the standards of the day.
I now see the BMW twin as today's equivalent of those bikes, they are selling very cheaply now despite being a well made and reliable machine and values can only go up from here.
I recently sold my BSA 650 for £3300, the same bike 15 years earlier could have been had for £400. |

phatjap, I dont know if this is of interest to you, but there are 2 XZ550's for sale here just now, as well as another that is being broken for spares. I think the engine is still for sale....dont know about any other parts though.
PM me if you want the links. |

Hi
I say, old boy, do you think you could shrink that avatar, just a tad, please.
It is playing havoc with the rest of the posts. |
