To close the topic (for me, at any rate):
In the end, the solution was as simple as a partial blockage in the airway within the gun. I discovered this when I hooked up a compressor with a higher pressure rating. After a few minutes of no progress at all I was sulkily blasting air through the non-working gun when there was a sharp "phutttt!" followed by a stream of grit at high force. So there we go.
