Earlier this year i imported this vehicle from Utah. i have been looking on ebay for a long time for a Dodge pickup and found this running very original unrestored truck with the body in very good condition ie no welding or panel replacement.
I am working towards getting her on the road and so far she has had new tyres/tubes/shocks/ battery/ wipers/ plugs along with a new water pump on order.
However i have hit a problem with the starter motor. I have got the truck running but the starter motor will not disengage and keeps turning once the engine is running. If the starter rod is pulled back to the start position it will make a horrible noise and the starter will disengage and the truck will run normally.
I decided to remove the starter motor and give it a careful cleanup. Access to one of the starter motor securing bolt by the engine block is very restricted even after removing the oil filter container none of my many 5/8 or 16 mm spanners will turn this nut more than a quarter of a turn and the gap is to small for a socket to fit and turn.If i do get this bolt off putting it back will be much more difficult.
I could do with a bit of advice here as i am mainly into chevy and mopar muscle cars and this is the oldest vehicle i have owned by 27years andi have no experience of these old engines Confused

Hi Missouri, welcome to the forum.

If I understand correctly, your problem is simply one of access to a starter motor bolt. Is that correct?

If so, the answer is to get a C-shaped spanner. (not a C-spanner!!!!) or possibly a crowfoot will fit.

There are probably others on the forum that can answer this better though!

Yes , the problem is the stater motor securing bolt by the engine block the other one came off easily. I can get a 5/8 ring spanner on this bolt and turn it less than a quarter of a turn.
The only way i think this bolt can be removed is with a very small 5/8 socket which i don t have but will have to find.
I am surprised to find this sort of problem on this vehicle. I would expect this on one of my 400 cubic inch V8s and certainly on a modern vehicle but not on a truck of this age. Confused

I got it all sorted out a good while ago. I got the starter motor out by using a long screwdriver in a socket on the inside starter motor securing bolt. This worked as i was able to loosen the bolt by a very small amount.
Anyway i got the starter motor repaired at a local garage for a tenner the garage owner has a 1949 Chevy pickup which helped.
Engine is now running quite nicely.I have never seen engine oil as black as the stuff that was in this truck So i changed the oil 3 times using a flushing oil. Once by mistake i left the truck running for 40 minutes as i got side tracked by a phone call and i was pleased that it ran for that long and it was not even over hot or bothered.
All the truck needs now for MOT is
Lights to fixed, i think that problem is in the switch as the original wiring seems to be ok.
Wipers not working.
I have had no problem with getting parts, i use the same guy as i use for my muscle cars.
Does any one out there in the UK have a rear bumper and starting handle that they have no use for re bumper any condition considered. I ask here before i start looking in the states.
I will post some pictures of my truck shortly Smile
