If I can switch from my French nerd to my Jaguar nerd head I believe that the photo above is a mid 50s model, notice the little notch on the front that sat on a bonnet strip of probably a Mark 1 or 2 car possibly even the Mk7 as they changed the base for the Mk8
They were made by Wilmot Beedon hence the number so at least it isnt a repro of which there are many _________________ www.OldFrenchCars.com

The just post war one seems to have a round base, but perhaps that is a separate piece. |
Just clarify the mascot varieties:
The first Jaguar cars to be fitted as standard with the familiar leaper were the MkVIII and the MkI. Prior to this the Jaguar mascot was an accessory sold separately by Jaguar agents. The first of these was introduced in 1938 and sold for 2 guineas. This mascot had a pear shaped base and could be fitted to any of the pre-war cars that had flat radiator caps and could also be fitted to the post war MkIV and MkV cars. Whilst the tail is broken off this one it does show the base shape:
Jaguar and SS Cars did not sanction any other mascot although it wasn't unknown for some owners to fit the "scolded cat" mascot that was sold by Desmo.
The mascots fitted to the MkVIII, MkI and later cars were redesigned with different bases so that they could be mounted on the bonnet (given that no radiator cap was present).
It looks as if the mascot starting this tread is a version 2a which would date from 1955 at the earliest. http://www.jag-lovers.org/cjw/cjw0302p69.jpg and http://www.jag-lovers.org/cjw/cjw0302p70.jpg

Ebay has seen an unusual number of the Desmo mascot for sale over the last year, most likely fakes or copies. Still a good looking cat. _________________ "The only thing I`m sure of.....is that I`m not sure of anything!" |

It looks identical to a mascot I own. It was removed from a 1963 Mk 2 Jaguar. Notch and all..... |
