| With the latest project we are at the stage of chroming the bumpers, rear lights, headlamp bezels and most importantly the alloy screen frame. Following the changes in Health & Safety a number of firms seem to have closed down, so I'm looking for advice of a company that is ultra good, since giving the screen frame to an over-zealous apprentice to buff before chroming would ruin it - and they aren't cheap either. Recommendations please! |

| I used a firm called Nuneaton Fine Finishing to do my wheelnuts, although the plating is very good the only problem I have is that, while deburring the nuts, they managed to leave them in a size somewhere between 18mm and 3/4" so it's hard to get a socket to fit them properly. I must admit I never took it up with them, purely because I couldn't see what they could do about it after the event. |

| Further research has shown (I've talked to someone who owns two of the sixteen originals) that in the early days due to a lack of knowledge on how to properly chrome alloy there were some cars that had polished alloy screen frames, so we are leaving it like that and chroming the rest. I just won't take the risk with a part that costs a lot of money and which would put the project back quite some time. Thanks all for your input though. |

You see stuff on older machinery chrome plated, from the early 1900's when chrome plating hadn't been invented. Nickel plating was used back then and I think looks nicer than Chrome (no added bling!) It does need frequent polishing to keep the shine tip-top.

I think chrome plating only started appearing on cars in the early 1930's.
I send stuff out to be chrome plated , from work, every month. If you have the time , it is better to polish it your self. Even the smallest scratch will show up after plating, so you have to do a good job in polishing. If it is already plated , they will have to strip the old stuff off. Reverse plating. |

I realise that its no longer required, but Derby plating, in Derby surprisingly enough, are incredible. They'll do nickel plating too I think if you'd prefer. I cannot recommend them highly enough. I had some big headlights that were dented on top, I've no idea how they did it, but they came back better than new. They even look smooth on the inside!
They refused to quote without seeing the stuff, but gave me an indication before I drove over with it from Ireland! A good point in my opinion.
I am restoring on a low budget, I've done about half the chrome, and it cost about double what I've spent on the whole rest of the car. I still think its worth it and I am hugely looking forward to saving up enough to get the remainder plated by these same folks.

Derby Plating quoted me £330 + VAT without seeing my Riley 1.5 bumper blade. I need four doing plus eight overriders so I'm still looking.

| I think the good guys always put nickel plating on before chrome. This is why all the chrome peeled off Jap. bikes in the 60's. |

| To get the reflectors , in headlights or side lights, re plated, in silver . You have to go to somebody that does gold and silver. Not all will do this job. |

That's right I'm sure. I've used Lee Metal Polishing (north Manchester) to nickel plate a few bits on my steam roller. It's copper plate first, then nickel and then finally chrome for a top-notch good job.

Yes, a lot of headlamp reflectors are not chrome plated. |

A friend of mine who has worked in the refinish trade for many years,
has recently set up a business that specialises in
spraying chrome using a special american system I believe...
He does a lot of work for motorcyclists and even chromes ornaments too,
thought you should at least know about it anyway..........
Located near petersfield in Hampshire
Here is a photo I took of some rear wheel huggers (motorcycle)
and heres a link to his business info if you need:
