Does anyone know of somebody able to transport an Austin Somerset from Bedford to the Preston area for less than the ridiculous £435 I have been quoted by the owner?

Shocked by gum that sounds pricey, I don't have anyone's details to hand but plenty of collection companies seem to advertise in the motors section of ebay, so perhaps try contacting one or two of them.

Does this mean you've returned to the A40 fold???

Hi

Can you not hire a trailer? If you don't have a tow vehicle, like me at the moment, then surely one of your mates do!?

Cheers

You can hire a trailer for less the £40 per 24 hours, so its then only your time and fuel....

Unfortunately I don't have a tow bar on my car, so it has to be a transport arrangement.

I bought the car thinking £200 would see it outside my door, then i got the quote from the seller and decided not to bother!

holy trailer hire conundrum batman! Smile

PS it'd be worth getting a few quotes, especially if it can be worked into a return run or something

Hi Old Nail,

I know of a good guy with a breakdown transporter who charged £500 to move a car from Bedford to Edinburgh (~360 miles). If he charges pro rata then your Bedford to Preston (~180 miles) might be £250.

He's based in Norwich which isn't too bad for Bedford. I don't have his contact details but I can get them if you are interested.

ON

Last time I had to move a car and didn't have a tow bar on any of my cars I found a local car hire company had a couple of cars with tow bars.

£50 for the car rental, £40 for the trailer, £90 petrol for your journey, and enough left over from your budget for the meals on the way.

Otherwise, if you are a bit flexible on timing, as Rick has suggested call any local car transport operators to see if they have any "back" runs available, these can often be had for under £1 per mile one way only.

Hi Gillberry,

I've emailed my friend who has used the Norwich man several times and I'll let you have his details when I get them.

Hi gillberry,

I will send you a PM with Nigel Fairweather's contact details. Although I haven't used his services myself, I have met him on a few occasions when my friend Ken Page has had cars moved by him. His transporter is a proper breakdown vehicle with ramps and power winch and he is insured but you would need to discuss the details with him. He is also interested in old cars and is an old owner himself.

I have just spoken to him on the phone and he advertises in Classic Car Weekly under the name of "Classic Collections & Recovery"

Peter

p.s. I've sent you a PM.

I'm not dead yet as she still doesn't know! Laughing

My silence has been caused by a Christmas 'present' that I got - a virus that destroyed my operating system.

I have had to wait until the shops opened to buy a new PC, and I'm hugely underwhelmed by Windows Vista as opposed to XP that I previously ran.

It's taken me hours to set up, initiate new anti virus programs etc, and try to get rid of the Norton 360 program that my new install insists I must have even though I don't want it!

Norton systems are absolute Ba***rds to remove, hugely frustrating! Evil or Very Mad
