Hi
I have a real bad clunking on the driverside front when going over bumps, had new dampers, fitted a new top ball joint today, and will do the bottom one on sunday maybe, but it doesn't sound like a ball joint. I thought CV joints on driveshafts, but it is only when going over a bump, so can't be that. Any ideas, as I am fresh out!
Cheers

I saw 'Mini Problems' & thought:
What a refreshing change from 'Major Problems'!
Have you checked there's not any fitting come adrift? (Could be anything bouncing back against metal as you hit a bump)
And remember how sounds travel in vehicles, especially old ones. For instance, a worn wheel bearing sound can seem to come from anywhere/everywhere...
Just a thought.
It's been many years since I drove a Mini, although I did have 5 or 6...

Hi
Yeah I was wondering this, as my damper on the other side is seaping some oil, got another coming on waranty. I thought will all good dampers, and if I replace the ball joints, can't be much else in the suspension!
Anyway, everything seemed thight, very tight infact!! hehe
Cheers

On Mini's I owned there was an engine stabilising bar at the top rear of the engine, when the bushes became worn you could get a knocking, with bumps and acceleration, but as its right in front of the bulk head aperture by the speedo you generally knew where the problem was.
Welcome to use my pit if you want to get under it and swing on bits!

Hi Dave,
The acid test for CV joints is to drive the car round in a circle on full lock.
Try both direction too. If it clunks during this test then you can be fairly sure it's a CV joint.

A frequent source of knocks is from a worn suspension knuckle and its grey nylon liner. This is at the end of the verticle suspension trumpet and the nylon liner fits in the top radius arm.
You need to either remove the arm by undoing the two nuts on the end or compressing the rubber cone with the special Mini tool. _________________ Rover P2

Hi
I have had the engine mounts and stabiliser replaced recently when the engine was out, but there is slight knocking from the stabilisers as I stayed with rubber instead of poly, but it is a different knock, gone worse today, so will be having another look tomorow pm maybe.
Thanks for all of the ideas, and I will report back tomorow, if I get to look at it.
Cheers for the offer of the pit, I will bare that in mind, I used a mates ramp last time, but that is sometimes being used with his own cars, so may call on your pit one day.
Cheers
