What ways are there to dispose of old cruddy fuel drained from a tank? I find it handy for washing stuff with (mind the skin!), but I've got more than I'll ever need so could do with getting rid really.

Rick if I were you... I'd find an old caravan a big open space and then conduct a brainiac type experiment! Wink

hehe but its probably so old it is beyond being flammable!! I had wondered about mixing it in with old engine oil when I take that to the tip, but its probably illegal or in some other way unsound behaviour!!

Save it for your 10/4 they'll run on almost anything. My son three quarter filled his diesel car with petrol. He realized before starting it and the drained out mixture ran the Austin for weeks. The garage were delighted to be rid of it.

I have some 50 to 1 outboard petroil that has been in a tank for about 6 years I'm about to use it bit-at-a-time in the Austin. But then, I always was a tight B****r Very Happy
You could do the same with your dodge. I know a few classic lorry owners who have arrangements with garages to take away polluted fuel.

It was a Salamander UJ - burned old engine oil like a vertical blow-torch, looked like a V1 rocket's engine standing on end.

A friend has something like that in his small garage business but the health-and-safety department make things very difficult.

I'm sure Buzzy will know , but some old tractors could run on parafin, petrol or any old combination.

Hi

It is true, some of the older tractors do run/can run on basically anything. Another reason for buying a tractor! Wink

Hmmm, these sally things, I know where there is a huge one, but it isn't allowed to be used, as you aint suposed to used them, probably down to polution and secondly down to insurance, if you had a fire your insurance would just laugh.

Just have a fire, blow the lot up! hehe

Rick I will have a few cans of this from you, I will run it mixed with newer stuff in some engines. also can use a bit for cleaning, may get a bit off your hands?

Cheers

Dave

Just go for a bit of a drive and find some nice sandy soil. Tip it out when nobody is watching, it came from the earth, so it can go back into the earth ! Put it in an open topped drum in a safe place and let it evaporate.

My barn find Rover came to me complete with 10 gallons of 23 year old petrol in the tank.

I took it to my Council tip in a selection of old oil cans and they agreed to put it in their oil collection tank. I think that by the time it went into the tanker and then in the recycling plant it would be such an insignifcant amount that it wouldn't make any difference.

I know from the time I filled a diesel up with petrol that the garages have a collection service for contanimated fuel, the service manger in our local friendly garage told me that he thought he was going to have a free source of petrol, pumping petrol out of diesel car tanks, however even when the owner had filled a near empty tank resulting in a 95% petrol diesel mix, you ended up with clouds from the exhaust running a petrol engine on it!, so he ends up paying a firm to take it away.

The fortunate thing about a 20s and 30s car or lorry is that everyone expects it to smoke a little.
Although my 10/4 engine is in excellent condition there was no significant increase in the smoke from the exhaust when using polluted petrol.

Maybe a more modern and efficient engine would smoke more? I don't really know: it's one for the experts.

If you leave it in a dish overnight it will evaporate as long as it dosen't rain.
