Sorry it's another can you ID post! downside of having a clearout!

These are 2 mechanical dipping reflectors 6.75" in diameter and a 12V (Lucas) solenoid, I suspect they are from a pre war Austin or Morris 10, 12 or 14.

The silvering in both reflectors is very good, if you can ID them or use them let me know.

There were a number of cars fitted with solenoid headlamps, best bet would be an old Lucas catalogue

I have a pair of these, removed from my 10/4 (6v) they were in pretty general use in the early thirties. Only one of the pair is supposed to dip; the other one goes out when you operate the dipswitch.

I removed them because my desire to live exceeded my desire for originality on my car. If you don't use the car at night they are OK, but I believe some MOT stations look askance at them.

my 1939 series e has the same system called dip & switch, nearside dips and the off side goes out completley. I'm restoring it to original spec so was planning to put it all back to this spec, however the sytem is only legal on pre 31 cars and will not pass the MOT, so I'm planning to put a dipping reflector on both sides... and not use it a night !!

I now have a couple of old pre-focus units in fitted, set to permanent dip and I have no trouble with the MOT. When I used to use it at night regularly I had a couple of conversion rims fitted with Lucas 700 units, and a relay operating off the original dip switch to to dip the filaments as a pair.
I had forgotten about the 1931 shut off and the fact that the old system was used until the late 30s.

It surprising how many of the old dip & extinguish lights are still in use even though they should attract an MOT fail.

My 1938 Rover 16 came with this system except it put on a nearisde sopt lamp as well and had an full MOT 12 years ago. I have since converted to double dip though

Hi Phil.
I have very happy memories of owning a 1938 Rover 16 back in the 60s, are there many of them left ? I'll always remember the registration of mine: FLY 47... couldn't park anywhere without someone having seen me.
