Gorgeous! Where did you get it from?

This is my favourite - one night coming back from Leicestershire, my train into London was three hours late and got to Euston at about half past midnight - with no tube trains running I was screwed, but after waiting for an hour got a taxi with three others paid by Virgin and went on a mystery tour around London dropping people off! Drove past the Hoover factory, what an amazing piece of architecture. Favourite art deco image would have to be something parked in front of it, or just one of the 1930's Bluebird cars

A thought crossed my mind, promoted by the picture of the Cord.

If a car manufactured in say, 1970 had a Cord inspired grille, would it be considered to be art deco, or art deco inspired? And if so, would it look better in typical art deco colours, or even with more art deco features?

There is a reason for me asking this! Confused

Quoting from Wiki..

"Art Deco was a popular international design movement from 1920 until 1939, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design, and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts, and film. This movement was, in a sense, an amalgam of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked during the Roaring Twenties. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, functional, and ultra modern."

I think it would have to be "art deco inspired". OTT pastiches (as in my own first submission to this thread) are sometimes good fun so why not "egg up" the 1970 design?

The question is though, how could such a design be egged up without changing the car too much? Colour?

Its not a very good photo, but look at the grille on this. As first impression article says, straight off a Cord. Shocked

Hi UJ,

Yes, the grill/hood certainly does look Cord inspired but it's really quite a nice example of '70s styling. I think if it were mine and I wanted to exaggerate its appearance I would play-up the'70s theme and leave the Cord bit as just the suggestion that it is. If you take the opposite tack I think you'd be struggling to deal with the non-Cord bits, which I think, will never look like '30s art deco.

Hi Peter, this one is going to be exactly as it was when it left the factory, restored after the gate receipt. The only possible exception will be the colour.

I believe that there arent to many of them left now, which to my mind makes it important to keep it original.

Just out of curiosity, are you anywhere near Musselburgh? Sorry if I've spelt it wrong!

Hi Uj,

'Plans sound good to me!

I think your spelling's just fine and yes, I'm about 6 miles away. My sister lives in Musselburgh.

I bought a Chrysler PT Cruiser a few years ago because it had a whiff of Art Deco about it: I loved the car, but the memsahib kept backing it into things and complaining about the heavy clutch.
