I was just thinking about how I hadn't contributed to this section & then I remembered a couple of tips from long ago. I know that a lot of classics have wood, both internally & externally, so maybe these tips will get you out of trouble.

1. If you have a light scratch in any (dark) woodwork, cut a walnut in half & rub it over the scratch - et voila! You'd never know.

2. If you happen to bang into any woodwork & leave a shallow dent, dampen a piece of cloth, preferably linen or handkerchief, lay it over the damaged area & apply a hot iron. The moisture transfers itself to the wood & brings the dent out.

The woodwork on my P2 was renovated some 25 plus years ago and with the hot Australian climate had started to crack again. I useed some 1400 grade wet & dry to clean up the varnish, then Farecla G3 to remove the W&D marks, next some Farecla G10 to shine it all up before giving it a final coat of Simoniz wax

End result is below

Heres a couple for you then. Classic cars have a tendency to use several different types of wood for the dash. Walnut, either burr or plain, and oak are two of the common ones. These are what are known as open grained woods. If the surface is really bad on them, after removing the old treatment, use what is known as grain filler. This improves the surface no end.

Cars using mahogany almost always have the wood stained. If the stain is removed during rubbing down, remember that water based stains allow the grain to show through, oil based tends to hide it.

If you are rebuilding a wood framed vehicle, always use Ash. Even though some people will say otherwise....

If any of you are lucky enough to have a rosewood dash that needs replacing, use a wood called Cocobolo....

Now for the flak....

The dash of the P2 is not the usual thin veneer, it is the full monty, half tree carefully crafted into a thing of beauty.

Now you have put me in the mood, I shall have to go and sit in the P2.
Open the door, the smell of wood and leather, of 60 year old car, a smell of byegone days, a different era.....I'm off

Yes, I know. In the days when I was sensible, I used to have a 105S which if I remember correctly had solid wood also... Can I come and join you in the P2?

Why do you think I like my 300? Leather and engine turned aluminium dash....

UJ, I just wish the forum has smellavision.

I did pop into the garage and sit in the old girl........Deep breath in, eyes closed, thinking of sunshine and warmth, smelling the leather, wood, carpets and a slight hint of the simoniz from last time the dash was polished.....hmmm lovely Laughing

Come join me, it's wonderful

One thing that amuses me nowadays is that it is possible to buy a ''New Car Smell'' aerosol. If only these people could realise the pleasure of sitting in a classic that smells better now than it did when it was first made! Laughing

As for joining you, just give me your address! I'll even bring a bottle of Barolo! You supply the crystal glasses!

those of us in 'dependable Austins' make do with a whiff of leather and the heady aroma of 20/50 dripping onto the exhaust pipe Wink Wink
