Yesterday, I loaded up the Pickup to go to the tip today. A round trip of about 15 miles. Naturally, its not the nearest one, thats in a different council area! Everything was nicely sorted into the different types. Metal, building rubble and wood. In an old 10 litre petrol can was some waste engine oil.

When I arrived, I started to throw the first type into the container. Up runs the man. As I have several different sorts, I have to pay a fee...ridiculous. If I wanted to dump for free, I could do so, but only if I came with one sort of rubbish at a time.....So much for saving the planet! Finally, it was time to dump the oil. This however, I was stopped from doing! The reason? I could only leave a maximum of 5 litres in a plastic bottle at one time, i wasnt allowed to dump the 10 litres directly into the tank. The mind boggles!

Is it really the same everywhere else?

One good thing came of this though. There is now one swedish worker that has just learned a whole heap of new english words....

Its the outward display of doing something that doesnt actually get anything of benefit done "jobs for the boys"

The thing that it makes me wonder about is if all this pollution talk is just a way for the authorites to get more taxes out of us. If they really want to do something about pollution, then all they need to do is offer incentives, as well as look around at all the small things that can be done...

I'm about 400km south of Linköping. And those dates arent to far short of the biggest event of the swedish summer. The midsummer celebrations...

i borrowed a transit van recently to remove an old sofa from my sons house and take it to the tip for him. When I got there I was told that I couldn't tip the sofa there as the van that I had arrived in was a twin rear wheel version!

Apparently if I had used a single wheel Transit I could have tipped it but despite there being only the one object to tip regardless of vehicle, it can't be tipped from a twin wheel Transit!
I then asked them what the rules were if 'hypothetically' I were to turn up with a suite on foot?..."Well that's ok you could tip it" they said.
I then reversed the vehicle the five yards or so out of the gate, dropped the sofa out and pushed it back up to the bloke who I had just spoken to who then said that I was now ok to tip it!

At least we can take comfort in the fact that idiots are everywhere!

You are lucky in one way that they let you tip from a "commercial". I asked at my local tip if there would be any problems using my 1964 pick up to take rubbish to the tip. I told him that I would only be bringing my own household junk, but he told me I would have to get a permit from the council.
I would have to apply and tell them how many times I would want to use the facilities in a year.
I can see me towing my trailer full of rubbish but with the pickup empty

I actually saw that a while ago when I went. A brand new empty pickup with a trailer full of rubbish. In this case though (and I quote) the owner ''didnt want to damage it''!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took a mattress to the tip in my VW T4 just a day before I left the UK for good
They would not open the barrier to let me in even though I showed them it was only a mattress. I had to park up outside, remove it and carry on my back into the yard, up the long ramp to the tip while they watched, none of the workers offered to help, just stood and watched.
If there was ever a reason to leave the UK behind I thought that was good enough by itself

That's a similar experience to mine Greeney, and to be honest it's typical of the current British 'attitude', best of all on the back of their reflective jackets in large print it said "Here to Help!"

Mrs. Nail and I have been discussing leaving the UK for a couple of years now, it's become over populated and over regulated, neither being good for quality of life.

I am not a chase the green grass sort of person, France has its problems, even more so with Sarkozi but I have 3 kids and I wanted more of what is real for them not some fake idea of reality you get on TV

O-N, Scotland is not over populated, we have plenty of space up here
I can sell you a nice 1930s bungalow with a 6 car drive leading to enough space for 20 cars in the back yard, also 2 cars drive in front of a 2 car garage and planning permission for a 36' x 21' garage

Regarding rubbish, I call the local authorities and they collect, they provide a great service
