Back in the good old days, if you used your commercial vehicle for goods carrying purposes (but there again why would you otherwise have it?) you had to display a "C" licence. I have a nice period tax disc holder in my Jowett, with twin disc holders. I would like to use the second one to display such an item, but I have never seen one darken the doors of Ebay etc. Does anyone have one that they might be prepared to part with, or even scan for me?

I was also looking for a C licence to show in an old pickup. I mentioned this to a guy that came around to buy some old bits off me, and next time he visited, he brought the old C licences from his Thames van for me to scan.

Somewhere (!) I have those scans, must have been 3 or 4 all dating to the 50s and varying in style slightly. I'll have a look for them as I'd like to put them on the site anyway - thanks for reminding me

Here we go, this is the earliest one that I have a scan for, expiring Jan 1951. I'm not sure when they were introduced, or when they stopped being used (the scans I have are for 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966 and 1971). Were they only replaced every 5 years??? they all expire in January of that year.

I plan to edit each one to blank out the current vehicle details, so that they can be downloaded from the site at the correct size for printing, and filled out as required.

I assume they are the same diameter as a normal tax disc - can anyone confirm the measurement of a 50s tax disc, I've not got one to hand? the scanned image is approx 7.4cm wide, which sounds about right to me.

I will have to sort the tax disc issues out though, perhaps look for a bolt on holder at Shrewsbury this weekend.

What was the difference between A licences and C licences?

I believe one was for carriage of "own goods" and the other was for carriage of "other peoples goods", but which was which?

I cant recall if these were issued annually, and I certainly didn't realise that they were still current in 1971.
I will check out the diameter tonight, but I am sure that they were the same diameter as the tax disc. My twin holder came with the vehicle and I can think of no reason for a twin one other than to accommodate a "C" licence.
