Billy Bedford may be forced off the road soon unless we locate a screen.
He is a 1965 CA with the conversion done by Herbert Lomas of Wilmslow.
Please help us find another screen, thanks!

Aha...thought someone would spot this, if you read my other messages I said I was looking at taking the screen I had sourced and making a mould to produce a laminated one. The cost is just too prohibitive at £1700 to £2200 plus so I think we will install this one and look for a spare now before it smashes again!
Make sense?

Well that's the worry as these toughened ones can be fragile.
Peter Swann at Pilkington was telling me that some that are really old seem to be "tougher" though and can almost be chucked about - others when new, can break when you are installing them.

Two thoughts occur to me from this story:
1. it seems unlikely to me (but then again I am a sceptic) that a body converter would have commissioned a special screen, so the question has to be raised, is the screen from something else? I guess a similar question must arise for parts fo specials and body conversion of all sorts.
2. Somewhere in the story someone noted that they knew a factor with lots of obsolete screens. Many established motor factors have sheds or attics full of obsolete parts - I know of one near me that has a loft full of old stock exhausts. I wonder if a sort of directory could be compiled of such known stocks.

Hi Paul,
Agreed on 1. but after nearly 4 weeks researching and believe me I have tried every avenue, there are no pointers that concur this suggestion. It seems around 150 to 200 Bedford CA ambulances were built by Herbert Lomas. There were several similar commercial bodies, Ice Cream, Removal Vans, etc but I have not ye suceeded in tracking them down.
I have written to every museum and society and association of Military and Commercial bodied CAs and also the usual Bedford clubs and forums etc.
Point 2. There are on the net a few lists of glass companies for classic vehicles but no luck either so far... guess to stock heavy and fragile items like glass is quite a gamble???

All sorted, the screen we found up in Derbyshire turned out to nbe a laminated one after all so we are happy to stick that one in.
