I need to make a gasket for my water pump and the general consensus is just to make one with gasket paper and compound.

The one - or bits of it - I removed is pretty thin but looking at it it's not very critical. I may also need to put a new one on the petrol pump as well so one that does both would be ideal.

I have also ordered new cork gaskets for the sump and rocker cover - will one compound type be suitable for cork/paper and OK with oil/water/petrol?

Any recommendations for what paper/compound combination to get?

Other forum members will be getting fed up with me saying this but .....
"I highly recommend Hylomar".... There have been some reservations voiced on using Hylomar for petrol sealing. I haven't experienced such problems but I've only used it for high pressure oil and for water.

As to gasket paper I've found cartidge paper works fine or if you have a particularly irregular surface to join then a corn flakes packet.

p.s. No! I tell a lie. I have used Hylomar on a petrol tank filter well without

I'll maybe give it a go with good quality cartridge paper - the water pump is easy to get into if it doesn't work...

With Shreddies aren't you meant to eat the packet along with the contents.

I don't remember my fether ever buying gaskets. They were all cut out of cornflake packaging. Of course it was my job to get the spanner out and cut the gaskets

Thanks all.

The cork gaskets are what Jim Carter supplies and they are the same as the originals. They are round and fit into a groove in the head. I'll try jsut the one side - its a splash oil system with low pressure so there shouldn't be much need for a really tight seal.

I use roofing tar paper to make gaskets when none are available. Works well!
