I have just been making a shopping list of the various bolts, set screws etc that I need to build up the Morris 8, am finding that the price of anything BSF is astronomical!! over 50p for a single 1/4" * 1" BSF bolt!! not even looked at the bigger bolts I need.

Have looked at all the usual suppliers, anyone know of a cheap source for BSF stuff?

Ta Dave

They are dearer but where a plain nut/bolt fixing is required UNF will be the same diameter and not many would notice the slightly different head size. These are very much more cheaper and have a larger variety of lengths as BSF have less choice now. Even stainless UNF can be used in places where high tensile fixings are not required.

I think I spent well over £200 on BSF fixings 9 years ago when restoring my 1968 Rover 16.

Beware using metric as these are smaller diameter but again it depends where they are being used

Thanks for the offer 47p2, I may take you up on it, I going to work out exactly what I will need rather than the first plan which was to buy a load on a guestimate!

Greeney, are you aware that the nuts and bolts on your Traction probably arent the current metric standard?

I have fitted several UNF bolts in place of BSF but it's a dangerous road to go down.... with the 1/4" there is only a difference between 26 and 28 tpi (I believe)
which means the nut will go on to the bolt and then tighten up after a couple of turns. Getting them mixed up (in a large box of odds and ends)
can provide many hours of innocent enjoyment when you need one or the other. I have a box like this. Wink

I did not mean to suggest in any way mix/match nuts/bolts only to use them paired where they bolt things together as a most old cars were as regards bodywork and on my Rover 16 parts of the steering/suspension and brakes.

I never did find a supplier of BSF captivated square nuts but used ordinary BSF nuts just to keep a standard thread size throughout as original although I do not really think it was worthwhile doing this
