Hi
This is a tale told to me recently by a friend about her parents Jowetts, just post-war.
They had a van which was used during the week to transport meals for a factory between the canteen and separate sites.
At the weekend they used their car to transport people to Blackpool and other nearby resorts.
Unfortunately they only had one rear axle, so on Friday nights the van went up on blocks in it's garage, the rear axle complete with wheels was removed and trundled through the village up quite a steep hill to the car's garage, and fitted on to the car.
Sunday night the whole process had to be repeated in the opposite direction with the added danger of it running away down the hill.

I wonder why?
The late Jowett rear axle is pretty bomb-proof (most of us Jowett owners spend our time tripping over spare ones, but never needing them!!)so how they ended up with only one seems a bit of a mystery. That said, in this modern day where logistics is a science, it would probably have occurred to them to drive the van to where the car was for the axle transplant. Lets face it a van with no rear axle is about as immobile as one can get! Laughing

Hi
Apparently there wasn't room to park up alongside either garage and besides that they didn't want to leave either one outside on blocks when not being used.
