Hello Rick,
I really enjoyed these pictures. One in particular set me thinking. It showed the M.P. (these characters never missed a chance for self promotion even back then). It was the stuff he was filling up with that interested me.......Coalene.
I knew Hitler and his gang" cracked" coal but this looks like a British commercial venture pre 1939.
Why are we not doing it now?Does anybody know?

Yes, that was the one that caught my eye too. Before reading what it was about I thought "Why is this guy filling his car with petrol whilst his chauffeur stands aside? Does he not trust the chauffeur not to spill it?"

Here I go again! But I just happen to live in the right part of the UK.
Coalene was produced as a by-product by Coalite (Chemicals) Ltd. Coalite gasified coal and produced lots of different chemicals at plants near Chesterfield, Derbys., near Ollerton, Notts. and I believe other places. The Chesterfield Plant closed down about two years ago. I don't know about other plants.
I don't remember seeing Coalene on sale after the early to mid sixties. As I remember it was quite cheap, but I believe it was unleaded because it had a reputation for being "hot", which I rather think probably meant it burnt valves out rapidly. There was never a great supply, but I do believe it was available pre-war.
Footnote:- I believe Coalite owned most of the Falklands Islands during the Falklands Dispute. Who were we fighting for? |

This is the bit that made me laugh!

A 1930's Labour MP with a Roller?
Unbelievable! |

These are great images which, despite being a child of the 50's, strangely stir memories in me, I can remember strange architect designed filling stations around London from when I was a kid, am I that old!
On a similar theme Woad Corner / Shell are planing to build a retro 40's filling station in Newport Pagnell... Hope it gets completed, last I heard they were still struggling to get it off the ground.
