£46 Billion collected in taxes from UK vehicle owners, but only £4 Billion spent on the roads - where's the other £42 Billion going I wonder?

France does not have a Vehicle road tax apart from when you register a car in your own name or change departmental plates and it is related to CV (Fiscal horse power) and age of vehicle, EVERY penny goes back to the road system as do fines and tolls etc, just taking a drive through France you will notice the difference; the roads are fantastic. always clean and clear very rarely potholed and during the winter all but the very small roads are clear within hours of snow fall because the farmers are paid a levy ever year to do their bit to help if they are needed.
As you know I live in a rural area and even the grass banks are short scuptured, not just one cut on the side the whole bank is shaped before i came to France.
I lived in a village called St Margaret's bay I was always calling the council to get them to trim the hedge so the OAPs didnt have to walk on the road

The roads are so bad here in Herne Bay I'm seriously considering getting rid of my A7 Special (Pigtin). With hard suspension each journey through the town is agony. The roads are obviously worse than when the A7 first came out.
Is central government responsible for the roads in France Greeney? It seems that here money is doled out to the County Councils and the 'low achievers' they seem to employ, and the moronic councillors we insist on electing somehow seem to fritter it away and still complain there isn't enough. Mind you, there probably isn't.
The potholes outside our house are showing the first signs of the usual 'quick fix.' They have drawn around them with white paint and if there is any of it left showing in twelve months time (or longer) a lorry will be blocking our drive for a couple of days while Asphalt is shovelled in and tamped down. some time later another lorry will arrive with a little roller to secure it further and with any luck it will last until the first frost. I don't think the French would put up with this sort of incompetence.

They certainly wouldnt, the governmental hierarchy is very different, obviously Paris is the centre of government then there are 26 areas and 100 departments, I live in the "Haute vienne" department of the Limousin area and each has there own hierarchy divided into mairies, and they are responsible for the area they govern if I get a speeding fine here the money goes to Limousin prefecture in Limoges and then sent to my mairie, that money then goes into the transport and roads pot and no where else, every year at this time is a mass effort to trim the sides and bushes and trees near the road side so as not to cause a problem but some of that is paid for by EDF because most of the electricity comes from overhead. especially as last year they were caught out by 6" of snow in 24hrs and it bent trees over and cut electricity for 5 days here. There was nearly a riot
MOTs or CTs are also government run here, not garage owned, so generally there is no axe to grind.

The road guys around here consist of 3 chaps two of which are more often than not seen sitting with there feet on the dash board reading a paper, while the other is ocasionally seen doing a little work. They also don't try to hide it, I saw one lot parked in/on the mini roundabout, 4 roads met, and all could see them sitting there.

Paying thiese lazy Beggars is where the other 4 million is going, paying them to read the paper! Just imagine if you gave them 42 million they would all be playing on laptops, not reading papers! hehe

Where do we get a tax holder like that from?
