I am aware there is no syncromesh between first and second gear. It engages in first no problem but, shifting from first to second whilst in motion is almost impossible when the car is in motion. Could anyone tell me if this is a common fault? Could it be a worn linkage and can it be fixed?
Can anyone shed any light on this as it is no fun trying to pull away in second gear up hill with a queue of traffic behind me. |

Hi Robbo,
If you have noises on entering first from rest then your clutch is not disengaging properly.
If you can engage first from rest without gronshing noises then that would eliminate the clutch as the cause of your second gear engagement problem and the problem is likely to be due to wear in the column change linkages.
One of the levers on the side of the gearbox operates the sleeve between first and reverse and the other operates the one between second and top. If the first lever is not quite disengaged then the interlock mechanism that prevents two gears being simultaneously selected, will prevent you from selecting second. You need to ensure that when your gear lever comes out of first, that the lever on the side of the gearbox is moving to the fully disengaged centre position. (Each lever has three positions.)
Can you easily engage second from rest?
Your car does have synchromesh on both second and top gears, it's only first and reverse that don't have it. That said, even if your second gear synchromesh was worn it wouldn't make much difference to changing up from first to second.
