|
|
I just got a 1962 Super Snipe.
It has the twin headlights. The outer pair of lights work just fine, both on dip and high beam.
The inner pair (which I presume should come on with the main beam, since there is no separate switch I can find) do not work.
No power is getting to these lamps.
I used a voltmeter to test this.
Anyone any experience of these cars? Is there a separate switch for the inner lamps? And/or a separate relay?
Any hints or tips much appreciated!

Giles,
The inner high beam lamps should be connected to the same Blue/White wire that goes to the outer lamps. The Black wire goes to earth at the same connector as the outers (possibly a clip screwed to wing panel). There are no separate switches.

Art,
thanks for this. I will have another look at this - it is probably just bad contacts or loose wires in that case.
It just seemed odd that both do not work......

I don't have any kind of a handbook!
Does anyone know if these are available for purchase or download anywhere at all?

Art has mentioned the Lucas colour coding of wires. Unfortunately, though many British Manufacturers followed this I know Ford and I think Vauxhall did not. There is also a typically French one etc. etc.
However, virtually all Manufacturers follow some code and it is well worth while familiarising yourself with it because the colour and its tracer (stripe) tell you exactly where the wire goes and what kind of circuit it belongs to.
Art has mentioned two, but others worth remembering in Lucas systems are:- Green goes to accessories via the ignition - Red is parking lights and White is often used for wires in the ignition circuit. The tracer indicates which circuit. e.g. different tracers for wiper circuit, left indicators, right indicators etc. all with green wires. Very useful when wires of many colours sprout from the same point in a loom (harness). _________________ Quote from my late Dad:- You only need a woman and a car and you have all the problems you

Hi Giles, you'll get one on eBay no problem, see:

There wasn't the correct one for my car on there unfortunately - however, someone had one for a Super Snipe Series 3 (which is mine) on Amazon for a tenner.
As much as people will pay for the "original" item to "finish off" their classic, it would be nice if people made these available by scanning them and uploading them somewhere. I will do so with this one.
Thanks for the tip.

Hello, I confess to knowing nothing about your car, but years ago on a cold November night I spent hours trying to fathom out why my Austin 1100 had no rear lights until I discovered that BMLeyover (whatever they were called that week!) had stuffed a line fuse into the loom somewhere. Might be worth checking that you are not afflicted with similar!!
