Grumpy old man mode ON: I didn't like the presentation of one their other presenters last week http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6216 and this week it was Mr Searle dealing with the Panhard who set me off.

The Panhard was an amazing car but Mr Searle seemed to ignore many of its virtues. He sees an 850cc horizontally opposed engine under the bonnet and starts to compare it to his 2CV. Fair enough but he appears totally blind to the fact that the Panhard is a big spacious car 15ft long with a giant boot and yet it manages 0-50 in 17 secs and top speed of 75 mph yet still returns an overall fuel consumption of 40.7 mpg in The Motor's road test.

If he had highlighted the contrast with the 12 ft long 2CV this would have been interesting but it was not to be.

After testing the Panhard in Feb 1954 The Motor went on to test the 2CV the following month and published the following figures: 0-40 in 42 secs, and top speed of 41 mph and an overall fuel consumption of 54.7 mpg

Admittedly the the 2CV only had a 350cc engine at that time and cost £565 as against the Panhard's £775 but in mentioning the 2CV the program totally failed to express what an amazing design the Panhard was at the time.

Grump OFF:

caught an interesting snippet on a (local) BBC programme yesterday evening, telling the story of Bond cars and the company founder Laurie Bond. Made a change to see something on there of interest Smile
