Hi

Coming home tonight, my steering felt a little strange, so thought I would drive the two miles home and check it out, big mistake! going about 30 mph and bang, something gave up, back end came round, corrected that, and then slid kind of sideway towards the hedge, then just accelerated to bring my back end up onto the hedge bank too! Phew, as there is a 8 - 10 foot drop on the other side! Shocked Shocked

Anyway, pulled up the road in first gear, on full lock nearly to keep me going straight, as I was on a bend, and round the roundabout to where there is a wide bit of pavement, this is where I left the damn thing!

Looking briefly at it under torch light, the drivers side wheel is normal, the passenger side front wheel however is not turning and is leaning in a bit towards the top, so obviously steering/suspension issue.

Will go back later and creep in first gear, back to work, all of about 700 yards then I can get it on the ramps tomorrow! Then scrap it with a bit of luck!

Cheers

Dave

Hi

Cheers Rick, about to go and have a look. Should be ok.

71, I had a problem with the Ford steering, but that was outside my garage, lets hope it doesn't happen again, just so lucky it didn't happen yesterday on the way back from your place Rick, as I could have been going 50 or 60mph then.

Cheers

Hi

Big problems, three police cars later I am home.....

Well, the ruddy wheel fell off while turning round, which inturn meant my driveshaft came out, and the wheel bottomed out in my wheel arch. This then left me in the middle of the road, next to a bl%%dy roundabout!

I thought better get the police, so had to run to a neighboring house, and phone, there was already a police car en route so some kind person must have rung. One car came, then two more, and the original one went. Then they closed the road.

Got towed by the recovery guy, so now need to pay him a sum of money and also get it out of there compound tomorrow, as I will already have one nights storage!

Then it will be going to be crushed, I aint, trusting it again, if I was on the motor-way, going to Burnley as I did a week or two ago, then I don't think there would be a Buzzy bee now!

Dear god

A lucky escape Dave. What caused the problem? Was it a ball joint?

Hi

I am not sure, but it looked like the ball joint had sheared off, causing the drive shaft to pop out.

I am just thankful it happened when it did, even if it had gone whilst I was doing 30 mph on the way to work, I could have hit someone, or gone off the road.

Cheers

Hi

If the roads weren't so salty I would go on the PF occasionally, but until I get another vehicle, which I am not rushing into, I will be on my safety bicycle, going to work on it won't be any big thing, as I do this quite a bit already. It is faster than a car in the mornings, and it is far cheaper!

Cheers

Donkey's years ago I had a similar experience with a Simca 1100 (one of the most horrible things the French motor industry ever produced) This was caused by the bottom ball joint coming apart. The best bit was the dealer's comment
" Oh yes that do that from time to time, but only when you are going slowly round a corner!!" Rolling Eyes

Hi
Didn't BLs have a reutation for wishbone ball joints collapsing?
I know I had a VP110 which did, while I was on a driving lesson, it happened on a relatively straight road opposite a garage and the mechanic came over with a big trolley jack and we pushed it across the road into the garage balanced on the jack at the front.
Then had to get the pupil home in a taxi, that lesson cost me a bit and I couldn't really charge for it although it was a learning experience for the pupil.

Moggies do it. I lost my nearside front wheel leaving a show field and blocked the only gate Embarassed

Again I was told that they only come apart at slow speeds on corners!

Hi

Just been and sorted it all out, not to bad in recovery fees, and got a little token for the scrap, considering it is only a light car. Also have sent back for a tax refund, so should get £80 or £90 for that.

Insurance wise, I have just taken out a new policy 10 or so days ago, if I send it back to claim what I can back, do I have a set period before I loose my no claims bonus. Or is it better to let the insurance run until I get a new vehicle? Only I am not planning on rushing into getting a car/van, so it may be a month or two!

Cheers

A company that i once worked for ran 8 morris minor vans bottom swivel probs were rife can only remember them letting go on full lock on sites etc .The bottom swivels shared one grease nippel with the bush on thebottom suspnsion arm that had a faster wear rate than the swivel hence the greas mostly went thataway and the poor little swivel had none. and ground itself to pieces .Regards The Fly
