Does the early '30s sidevalve Minor share any engine parts with the later Series 1/2 8?

thanks, R

I think (and stand to be corrected!)the very early 30's minors had an OHC Wolseley based engine, which was replaced by the sidevalve engine for the last couple of years (mid 30's) production this was the engine that was then used by the first Morris 8?

yup the first Minors had the Wolseley-derived unit, and they switched to a more reliable sv in around 31/32ish I think, which is why I wondered if it went on to be used in the Series 1 '8'. Sounds like there is a good chance of compatibility then.

Does anyone have any underbonnet photos of the Series 1/2 Morris 8 engine?

Thanks, R

Rick

I have 2 sets of the Morris Master List of spares, one dated 1935 and the other 1938, both about 2" thick ! good for cross referencing if you want to borrow them?

I've since found out that there is little if anything common to the MM and the 8 engine. A bit surprising really

Although as standard lots of the 8 to MM engine bits were different, many components are interchangeable, you can put a later crank in an earlier engine and thus use shell bearings rather that white metal, cams are interchangeable, the pistons are all 57mm std, the early ones had 2 compression and 1 oil control rings, then to increase compression, for the Series E the position of the con rod pin was moved down the piston, which takes the piston to the top of the cylinder, whilst previously there was 3mm clearance, and later a 2nd oil control ring was added. The later MM had a water pump fitted and the military engines had an oil filter adapter. The head changed a couple of time to accommodate the changes in cooling arrangements.
I suspect there is a specific challenge to your original question?
