I'm hoping the pic link has succeeded .... can anyone identify the car my Grandfather is sitting in please? He was a chauffeur in Colchester, Essex between ?1909 and 1914. Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi Heather,

I believe this to be a 1909 Argyll 14/16 hp Side-Entrance - however there are one or two little differences, which should be expected as many cars of this period don't necessarily have the manufacturers bodywork fitted, some new owners preferring to have them made by their own local coach-builder.

What is different, if haven't already spotted, is the full height passenger door in your photograph, whereas the Argyll brochure image shows their version as "half-height" (for the want of a better description).

All that said I'm open to alternative suggestions from any of the members here as I'm still learning every day. Wink

Scotty.

Thanks very much ..... I came across this old Colchester advertisement and, funnily enough, my Grandfather was an apprenctice here!!

Do you think it is the same car?

Hi Heather,

No, I don't think so - sorry. Granted Argyll made a car similar in appearance, the Flying Fifteen, but the one shown in the advert is not an Argyll.

To my untrained eye, Scotty, there were obvious things that were different/missing but it was worth asking - just so that I knew one way or another Smile Experts can see things that people like myself cannot! It would have certainly been a coincidence had it been a variation of the same, that's for sure. I think there is a strong possibility that the car was certainly purchased from Paulls though - it was well-known in the town and I could see my Grandfather recommending them to his employer.
I do appreciate your help in this. Many thanks. Heather

I wonder if the car in the advert is actually an artists impression as the doors do not really look practical?

the shape of the car's bonnet in the advert looks vaguely familiar, one for the reference books I think!

I would agree with you Paul, the doors appear very narrow, but as you mention it may be artistic licence - remember the "big" A30 artist impressions or was it very small people.

Very often, and forgive me if you know this already, many early car drivers doors are purely there for asthetic balance and were non-operative, often having the spare wheel adjacent and blocking the "door". However, if you look carefully though you can just make up what appears to be vertical pins sticking out of the top edges of the bodywork at the doors, these could be door handle triggers, which were a popular method of operating the catch.

Seems odd that there is no provision for a folding roof either

First time I've been able to check the posting for a while - thank you for all the input. The advert comments were interesting - I'd just seen a car but, like I said before, experts saw more Smile I'm indebted to you all.
