if you have a non-transferable number plate which could be worth a lot of money, can you add the price of the plate to the value of the car?

or is the number plate worthless as it has to stay on the vehicle in question?

Many people prefer an old car to still wear its original number. Therefore I suppose a car with its correct but non-transferable number will be worth a bit more (but not to the value of the plate, if it was saleable) than an identical car, that has a new re-issued number.

If it's non transferable it can surely only add to the persona of the car it's fitted to and will only be of interest to someone wanting that sort of car. This, I should imagine would reduce it's value against one that can be transferred.

My A7 special has the registration EGO but is non-transferrable and of little value to anyone not wishing to risk death in that sort of car.

Having said that. Any old cars value may well be slightly reduced by having an age related but alien-looking reissued number plate. My 10/4 has an SSV reissue from Scotland and it always grates when I look at it.

Don.

well the reason for my question is that I got my log book for the Alvis this morning, it can keep its original plates on a non-transferable basis but a woman I spoke to at the DVLA, whist trying to get the car registered, reconed that the plates were worth in the region of £!5,000. Confused

not that I'm really bothered, I'm more pleased that the car can use its original plates Very Happy

That's probably what the DVLA would sell them for if they got their hands on them. Rolling Eyes

But they're not worth that,

because they're non-transferable.

good stuff!! have you decided what type of plates to go for? either pressed aluminium or maybe the raised peak plates, with the separate plastic letters, might be appropriate?

hi rick, I'm going for the pressed aluminium ones, so far I've got 2 quotes, 1 at £90 per pair of the internet....or

my local motor factors can get them for £65 per pair, so I'll probably order some off them

That's expensive for plates, they should be around £30 for a pair

Hi
If you are buying period type plates, do the rules about them having the BS number and/or makers licence number, have to apply as they do for moderns?

Can you have them made up by the people who do show plates at various shows, without having a look at the registration docs?.
