Ok my Dad has just come back from Oz , As usual he brought me another pile of car magazines. And as usual there was loads of vehicles I would love, but unusually this time I actually rang up and bought 1 Shocked So now I am the proud owner of another 1950s British export (I will post some pics when I get it back promise) . I have sorted out the shipping from that side (all via the internet and SKYPE) but getting it shipped in to my local port of Southampton (although its a MASSIVE container port) is proving a bit more problematic. And as the costs rise the saying "Rip off Britain" springs to mind. I mean I expect to pay import duty and VAT , but I would love to keep the other associated costs down . So If anybody has any advice or info I would love to hear it . cheers "MO"

The duty, and then the VAT, is payable on the combined purchase, land transportation in Oz, and the shipping costs all added together. So finding a good price on all the above will also save on duty payments. Handling & container emptying fees at this end also cost a few hundred, or at least they did with me at Thamesport.

As it is British goods returning (ie you're not importing an Australian vehicle, rather a vehicle that was exported from the UK ages back, and now you're returning it) I think you avoid some duty or VAT (need to check on that).

Remember to pick up the C&E 386 declaration when you've paid the duty at the port, otherwise you'll run into strife when you try and register it (which you can only do once it is MOTd - on the chassis number initially).

Heres the latest Rolling Eyes It seems collection, placing in container and shipping is going to cost me about £1800. then theres 10% import tax on the price I paid for the vehicle, Then theres 15% VAT on the combined price of the vehicle and the shipping. It dont end there..... This end its £150 to get the container unloaded from the ship (or so Im told , what happens otherwise ? do they just leave it on the ship Shocked ) Then aprox £50 to get it customs cleared and then about £150 to get an agent to collect the container , take it to his yard and take the vehicle out of container and return container to depot. Its becoming an expensive old "do". does anybody know better ? any info ( or a shared container) glady received , cheers "MO"

That sounds a little more expensive than what I paid in 2003, if I remember correctly I was around £1800 total for a 20' container from Australia.

Another alternative is RORO....no container......but it is not as safe.
