Now I have got the oil sorted.....
What 'dot' brake fluid should I use do you think ??
Halfords only stock a minimum of dot 4 and I wasn't sure if this would be ok for the very antiquated brakes on my A30 ?
They did say the Austin probably would have had Dot 2 or even 3 originally - but can I still buy that anywhere ??? _________________ Life's too short to keep your car in the garage, get out there and drive it ! |

Hello Rick !
I have been looking for some mineral brake fluid as you suggested, but there isn't any locally and online it seems that the 'mineral based stuff' is targetted at mountain bikes with disc brakes ...... will that be ok ??
Seems like there's always something new to discover about this car _________________ Life's too short to keep your car in the garage, get out there and drive it ! |

Dot 4 is fine it can be used to replace dot 2/3 or to top it up, it has a slightly higher boiling point than the earlier stuff.

All the dot 4 fluid I have found seems to be synthetic though and I wasn't sure it would be ok ...... the brakes are bad enough without me putting the wrong fluid in them !!!! _________________ Life's too short to keep your car in the garage, get out there and drive it ! |

I wouldn't put stuff the silicon stuff in with seals that have had dot 3.
If its glycol based (as is dot 3) it will be fine, the stuff I have in my garage is dot 4 glycol, bought a couple of months ago.

Is that really your taste in music? Oh and I use DOT 4 in all my old cars. |
