Info about this interesting undertaking came through the other day, if anyone can assist Alan, or is looking for info about a dealership, it might be worth contacting him.

------------------------------
Stumbled across your website tonight and enjoyed having a browse through the old car advertisements etc.
Thought I'd get in touch and let you know what I can "bring to the party". I don't own a classic vehicle or anything like that but I have been working on something which I believe to be quite unique and for almost ten years now.
I have been compiling a master database of car dealers (franchised dealers) covering the whole of the UK, the Isle Of Man and the Channel Islands, from the present day going back some 110 years to when dealers began. I log makes sold, the full address of the business and the years in existence. I have spent hundreds of hours in libraries in Scotland and England carrying out research and this is very much an ongoing project which needless to say I enjoy! It's endless too! I have around 90000 entries now, covering around 650 makes of cars (yes, that's makes, not models!!). I do lead a very busy life outside of this so can work on it on and off as I get time.
Much of my info has come from adverts in newspapers, car magazines, Yellow Pages and also from manufacturers dealer listing leaflets etc. A chap from the Triumph Register once got in touch with me and was overwhelmed with the info. I sent him on Standard and Triumph dealers. So much so that he now picks up relevant info at autojumbles etc and sends dealer booklets to me which has been brilliant!
So if any of your UK members are trying to trace the address / dates of a dealer etc. I will be only too pleased to try to help - despite my vast database I still have many gaps though particularly pre-1980s. Equally if anyone has, in particular, a full UK dealer listing for the year for their classis car that would be of great interest to me and would help me greatly to reduce these gaps.
Getting late now, a busy day at work tomorrow so had better close off but if you consider my project of interest it would be great to hear from you. My own email address is alancain at tiscali.co.uk if you'ld like to drop me a line Rick.
Cheers for now.
Kind regards.
