|
|
I'm just modifying my cars original sidelight/indicator lamp fittings to two separate units [landrover ones].
I was going to stick with orange and clear lenses but just to be different thought of using clear lenses and orange bulb for indicator.
What in fact is the situation legally? Modern cars seem to be fitted sometimes with clear lenses and coloured bulbs on all lamp units. Some have clear indicator units on the front but orange on the back.
thanks |

The only beehive bulbholders I have seen have parallel pin bayonet fitting; the orange 12v bulbs unless I am mistaken (which happens often) are offset pin. So for simplicity stick with the orange beehives and clear 21w bulbs is my advice. |

It is quite OK to use orange bulbs in clear lenses - standard oorange 21w BA15s or BA9 Halogens can be had which I have in my Lucsas torpedo sidelights.
Pre 1966 built cars can legally use white to front and red to rear although not really safe _________________ Rover P2

Thanks for the replies.
Rear indicators can be coloured bulbs/clear lens as well?
stop/tail lights need to be red [just wondered as i'm sure a modern car i saw earlier today had clear lenses at the back]?
I've picked up a bunch of clear lenses and thought i might as well use them for a modern retro look! |

Rear indicators can only be red only on pre 1965 cars - lenses can be clear as long as as they have orange bulbs in them on any car.
I also undestand that that stop/tail can be clear lensed as long as they have red bulbs in them and they can can be seen clearly when operating
A pair of red reflectors is mandatory however at the rear _________________ Rover P2

If you go to a model shop Tamiya produce paints and make a Clear Red (# X27) and a Clear Orange (X26) for model cars and planes. You could use these to paint clear bulbs. Not sure how heat proof it is but it maybe worth a try if you are really stuck. |

Also craft stores do Glass paints in Magic Marker form.
I have used an amber one to recover an amber bulb from which the colour had started flaking off, otherwise I would have had white indicators.
A red one would probably help all those people running around with pale pink rear lights. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.
