A friend who reads the Morris Minor owners club magazine tells me there is in the latest issue a report on the government scrappage scheme.

It seems that a Morris Minor, Austin 1100, MGB GT and an MG Midget have been scrapped for new cars.

Let's hope the owners of the new cars are very happy and their purchases last as long as the old ones did.

Glancing at a friend's copy of Classic Car Weekly a week or two back, and there was an article showing a very tidy Minor pickup that had been chopped in against some modern beantin Rolling Eyes

It doesn't surprise me.

Welcome to "Roll over & take it Britain".

Too much bloody apathy in this country.

Stupid question but what happens to the old cars...are they sold on?

I drive around in a manky old Fiesta which was worth about £300.00 If it got nicked would I be able to get £2000.00 off the insurance as it has to be worth £2000.00 now as I have owned it for more than a year? Does this then follow my premium will increase as my cars is worth more?????????

What a load of old hosre shire hey

I think the term "Scrappage sheme" explains it.

Well if you are in the market for and can afford a new tin can.

Seriously there have been some saveable cars scrapped, but look at it this way, the fewer there are left afterwards the more valuable they will become.

For the dealer to be compensated from the government and vehicle manufacturer, the car has to go to an "Authorised Treatment Facility" after delivery of the new vehicle who will issue a "Certificate of Destruction". the V5 has to be completed so the DVLA database will show the car has been scrapped, before the government coughs up.

So I guess at best the vehicle could remain in tact but would loose its identity? or could be broken for parts, I suppose it boils down to the definition of "Destruction"

We're on the case. The dealership has been contacted, the car seen and efforts are being made to save it. As BMW owns the Riley name, it is hoped it will be spared the crusher.

A Riley RM with MOT must be worth more than £2k? if this is the case its a simple comercial question, no garage is going to scrap a car worth more than £2k!!!

As things are at the moment, it'd be easy enough to negotiate 2k off most list prices anyway I'd have thought, and still keep your old car to sell on separately!

Pointless scrapping of any older car, even a more recent beantin, in usable condition really grates. How wasteful is that!!?? Mad

After I alerted him to the car's fate, the RM was valued yesterday by a Riley expert at £1200-1500.

The scrappage scheme is exactly what it say's, hopefully common sense will prevail and dealers will recognise the difference between a scrapper and a classic. As long as the customer gets his £2k discount I'm sure a deal could be struck to bypass the scrappage scheme and save worthwhile vehicles.

Its a shame if it has gone even if only worth £1200, they are charming cars.

This is the car in question, I checked the reg on the DVLA data base and it dosn't look as if it still assosiated with this Riley... may be the reg was sold seperatly ?

I believe the reg has been transferred to the owner's new car.

so it looks like someone's bought it for the number, robbed that off it, and is chopping it in against a modern shopping trolley. I bet the people who looked after it so that it still survives to this day would weep
