It does look like a fair weight of earth to shift. What they need is more labourers. Here's an example of the same job in reverse...

Hi

It is amazing what they did isn't it! A lake near where I grew up is ginormous, and few know it is only 6 foot deep all the way accross, as that was dug by slaves.

The one at work has a dirty great oak plug, with a big chain on it, so you can drain it, if you needed to, the drain is a tunnel underground and enters the river about a mile or more away. If you look into the tunel from a manhole that has been put in it, you can see fish swimming up from the river aparently, not looked myself yet!
