Have you stumbled across anything unexpectedly interesting, in the most unlikely of places?
A couple of weeks back, erindoors, junior and I were ambling through a nearby town and happened to glance in a charity shop window. All the usual stuff was on display, flowery skirts, jumpers with boldly colour patterns on them, the usual. Sat on the floor though was this little gem, barely visible tucked away in the corner of the window...
At first I thought it might be a 1/24 scale plastic Airfix model of the Gloster Javelin, but the stand alongside it suggested something a little more interesting. So I hotfooted it inside for a better look. One tap on the wing showed that rather than being plastic, or perhaps wood (I wondered if it was an old wind tunnel model), it was in fact cast aluminium and Very Heavy. The matching stand is also a professional job in aluminium, and has a few code numbers stamped in the base.
The price was very reasonable so it was bought. I think it was built by the Gloster factory, in the early to mid 50s. It is modelled on the prototype Javelins and I think, produced in limited numbers either for high-up bods in the Air Ministry/RAF, or perhaps (because of its size) was displayed at a Farnborough air show or other trade event. The wing span is over 2ft!
I didn't think anything interesting ever turned up in charity shops, but I was pleased to be proven wrong

I wish! Some years ago a pile of (mostly signed) Beatles stuff was sold at a local charity shop, while I was still living with my folks. I hot-footed it to the shop after mum mentioned that she'd seen all this stuff displayed in the window, all for £50. I was too late and they'd just left it on display for a while, but sadly now sold. A few days later I watched the Antiques Roadshow and they valued one ticket, with the four signatures on it, for £800.
The stuff in the shop included press photos, Beatles fan club magazines, and so on, most of which looked to be signed and on the face of it they looked genuine enough. Quite a pile of stuff, must have been over 100 items.... even if most were "signed" by roadies or other backroom people, some were bound to have been genuine
When I was a nipper, my gran bought me a plastic Beatles guitar from a local jumble sale. Cost just 10p, and I've still got that albeit not in A1 condition.
