Whilst visiting some 'open gardens' for charity I always look out for any interesting cars. I came across this superb HRG sports car in one of the gardens. The owner wasn't around to ask what happens when you pull (or push) the handle that comes through the floor on the driver's side. It had HRG cast into it.

Can any of the pre war car experts on here tell me? I have not been able to find anything on google about this part of the car.

That's for the ejector seat Mr. Green
But seriously,it seems to be in a very awkward position,so I hope it's not a driving function.

My guess is the headlight dip switch, or possibly a floor mounted starter, like on early Minis? Confused

My guess is - assuming it has cable brakes- a cable tension adjuster. Yes, you adjust cable tension while driving! Riley 9 owners will know what I mean.

Maybe a chassis-lubrication pump?

the Riley Kestrel (1930s) I was looking at the other week had an arrangement near the gearlever for just such a purpose, although on that I think either side rear brake could be adjusted individually, I think....

I would guess Keith D gets the cookie!
Although I knew a chap who had the double of this HRG, I never knew its age, but there were cars between the Wars which had an exhaust by-pass or cut-out. Not least of these was a 1927 Silver Ghost I had the privelege of driving regularly.
And you think the Silver Ghost was quiet!!!!????

I saw this lovely MG SA from 1936 and it had a similar item on the passenger side floor, I now wish I had asked what it was Crying or Very sad

Uncle Alec is correct.

The "thingy" on the floor is to adjust the cable brakes..

I think the Riley had a foot brake adjuster and a hand brake adjuster from the drivers seat until superceded by the Girling system.
