What I get angry about are some classic car sellers on Ebay who add "Transferable number plate" A claasic car is never the same again. It takes away all the originality. I hate to see Morris Minors with Jaguar engines fitted to name but one. Keep the plate keep the car original. I would never sell a car to someone who just wanted it for the plate. Also you can tell just by looking at a car if the plate is not original. It wouldnt feel right spending fortunes on a restoration if it had an " age related " plate. It would never be original. I dont think I would buy one in the first place. would you?

I agree with both of you.

It's a real sin to separate an old car from its original registration. Fortunately those who seek so called "personalised plates" have more exciting choices in the recent offerings thus thankfully making the older plates less desirable.

Unfortunately there is still a temptation to asset strip old cars that are sold to foreign lands given that their plates have little value to their new owners.

I agree with all of the above, I hate re-reg'd cars as they stand out like a sore thumb (and yes, my 34 MM has an age-related number - but I don't know if it just lost it at the time of computerisation, or whether someone took it off to adorn their modern with it).

Hmm, just had an argument over on the A30/35 forum about this very subject: http://forum.austina30a35ownersclub.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2450&p=22134#p22134

I'm going to contact my Cambridge's previous owners and see if any of them have any pre-1983 documentation to support the original number. I suspect the number was put on a car that was then subsequently scrapped. The DVLA have no knowledge of the number being transferred (or any record of it being on any car) so fingers crossed I'll find some evidence, then I'll put in a claim. I really think the age related plate spoils the look of the car.

Do you know what the original registration was? If you put it into www.cartell.ie it will tell you if it's on a modern. If it is, I reckon Audi TDI...

DVLA issued my friend with an age related plate for his 1958 Volvo...the plate was for a 1971 car Shocked ..he pointed out that it was illegal for him to drive and they soon changed it for a very nice plate that was legal. Rolling Eyes

Unfortunately you can't always tell, my dad sold his Morris Minor on Ebay, it went for a very low sum to a well known Ebay trading no.plate dealer who used his spare Ebay account to bid for the Morris. Within two weeks the number (TPM 657) had been stripped off it, within the month it was back up for sale with a classic car dealer, bearing the numberplate "705 XUX" and at more than twice the price my dad sold it for.

The chap I sold both E83Ws to promptly removed the number from the pickup, and I'm sure got the number off the van soon after Evil or Very Mad Ok they were now his to do with whatever he liked, but it still made me seeth after being fed a line about how he liked things "just so", and wouldn't dream of removing the number(s), grrrr.

is it posable if the vehicle has its original number to ask the DVLA to make it non transferable I would love to do this with my Rover so the number can never leave it.

Unfortunately not, I'd do this with all my cars if I could, but think of all the potential transfer fees the DVLA would miss out on if they implemented such a scheme Rolling Eyes Mad

Certainly not many people on there want to keep their cars original. I admit the sniping, sarcasm and arguments on there do get rather wearing after a while.

Something I'm glad we don't have with this forum! Smile

Although it would be nice to keep the original plate on a car, sometimes it is not practicable, I will have LJC 911 for sale soon, Why you may ask, answer to fund the respray and re upholstery of said car, this is only way I can afford to keep the car on the road. Thanks dave
