Hi all,

where do I find an old Gasstation sign, with light ? the ones you hang on the wall.

I have a friend who wants to buy either a Shell or Gulf sign ?

But only the type with light.

I tried to search on the net & "Fleabay" but nothing came up Rolling Eyes

Maybe I didnt use the right name/search word ?

I also want to find a site, who knows about these old car related signs (with light) not the painted type.

Hi Rick,

No I am after the type cast in hollow plastic, with lights inside .

I have a big Blue one, with SEMPERIT in Yellow raised letters, on both sides, the top part is metal.

Dont know how old it is ? I found it in a closed garage many years ago.

It has a strange type of light tube inside.

Hi Buzzy Bee

Thanks, that has some of the signs, I was after.

I will contact some of the people, and see what they say ?

Dont know if my friend will go "cold" after seeing the prices ?

Hi

Yeah that sort of thing has a real following, I was looking at some really rough tin signs the other day in a sale, and they went way above estimate, at over £100 each. I was expecting to go to about £30 like everyone else.

This place may not have the things you want, makes good browsing, though if the prices are right there, I might think about selling up and buying another steam engine! Smile

Cheers

Hi again Dave,

again thanks for the link, very nice page, and he did have some illuminated signs, but they are expensive.

Maybe I should hang on to that Semperit sign, untill my retirement, and THEN sell Wink

Wasn't Semperit a German tyre maker?
Certainly, holding on to it might increase it's value. But will the current young people, when they get old(er),want a sign of a name that means nothing to them, and pay a high price for it?Time will tell.

I have a few illuminated signs, some modern some older

These signs usually are thrown in the bin when they are finished with. It is difficult to find them and when they do come up for sale can be expensive

Hello 47p2,

Thanks for posting, those are nice Cool

Regarding finding / getting them, I know Crying or Very sad

Some years ago, there was a British Leyland Dealership, not far from me.

They had the complete rack, of the White illuminated signs outside Cool incl the big round BL.

One day they were gone, and I thought about stopping, to ask if I could buy them?
every week I kept thinking about it, and finally one day I did stop, to ask what happened to them ?

They had been put in the back of the scrap, and had sat there for a long time, they threw them out a few days before Rolling Eyes
and I could have had them for free, if I only had asked.

Jens Christian

PS I will make a picture, of my sign, and show you.

I was speaking with a mate last week regarding light up signs and he told me the local Aston Martin dealer had one lying in his rear yard for months. One day he went in and asked if he could buy it only to be told it had been put in a skip Shocked

Here is a Bosch sign I also managed to find. I remember seeing these when going into various shops in the 70s and 80s in the Glasgow area

Hi Very Happy

so your friend did the same mistake as me, what a shame.
I remember those BOSCH signs Wink

I finally got my digi cam with me to the garage, so here are 2 pictures, of my old sign.

My memory has played a trick on me Confused so its a MICHELIN, not SEMPERIT.
But I dont suspect that will have negative influence regarding value, as these are the tyres, all formula one drivers use Cool
Its the same on both sides, and has a rounded outer end.
I really like the glow it gives, but I dont have it turned on, as I dont want to risk burning the strange short(fat) light tube.

I do like that Michelin sign Very Happy

I managed to obtain another Rover sign last year, so today I fitted a lamp behind it, I just need to insert a fillet of wood to stop the light shining through from behind
