Twelve months and ten days after the terrible 'Black Saturday' blazes raced over parts of Victoria, my wife an I revisited Marysville. We had been there just a couple of months before the fires and were very impressed with Bruno Torf's sculpture garden, We were dismayed to think that along with virtually all the homes in the town, his beautiful work had been destroyed.

Fortunately, a lot of his sculptures were terra cotta, and although badly damaged, Bruno was able to repair enough of them to re-establish his garden. Some of his works were fibreglass and didn't survive. New plants, plus the regeneration of tree ferns and some of the native plants has allowed Bruno to re-open his garden. Now he is busy building his house.

We traveled in our SD1 for this trip Here we have paused to look at the eucalyptus trees that are recovering.

One small corner of the town, with one main building, did survive. It is surrounded by deciduous trees. In among the trees is this-

It hasn't turned a tyre for many years and looks a lot better than it really is. The metal moth is gradually taking over. Unfortunately it is not for sale.

At Bruno's we found this-

The motorcycle had been part of one of his displays. Imagine how much heat was there to melt the aluminium parts.

Here is some of bruno's work-

There is a website where you can see more of his work, and it is well worthwhile to look at the 'Aftermath' page.

As we left Marysville we stopped to see where new houses are slowly being built to replace those destroyed.
