My understanding of the law regarding the use of red diesel is it is to be used only for agricultural use, and there are strict rules even then. High fines and confiscation of vehicles plus prison terms. Recovery vehicles used to be excempt from MOT, wether that is still the case I dont know.

for MOT as long as the gross is over 3500kg and the pickup /truck is older than 1960 no MOT is needed but you still have to keep pickup/truck in a road worthy shape .
moble crane , show truck with a fixed display on the body , can run on red diesel dont no how old thay have to be(or if the law has changed) , and if it is fixed miles

can any one add to this ?

Hi

I nearly had a mot exempt, tax exempt, landrover from 1990, it was also on red diesel, with being registered as agricultural, but you would need to prove with invoices it is being used for agricultural as a main, then you would need to go through declaring tax etc, then you would be stopped every 5 mins, and when the ministry stop you, they will find something to do you for, well they do to the people I know who have been stopped.

All in all, it is easier to run on white diesel, probably cheaper in the long term, with your fines taken into the bargain. If you can get an mot, get one, as you still have to have the vehicle in an motable state, so £40 for piece of mind, is nothing in my book!

I have been through it all, thought about having the landy, everything exempt, red and all, but to me it didn't seem to add up in the long run, with stress and mither taken into the bargan!

Cheers

Dave

Its simply not worth the risk. Why not try running it on cooking oil? you can buy the neccessary to make the oil usable and it is just as cheap and perfectly legal.
