If you can turn it by hand but not the starter I would check the starter circuit.

Yup check all starter connections as victor 101 says, including the main engine->body earth strap, and the solenoid (is it separate on those???).

Sound like you might have some corroded conections.
You could get a good reading with a meter but if there is corrosion the power won't get through enough under load

Disconect all conections, live and earth, clean all surfaces and reconect.
I fit shake proof star washer wherever there is a conection, they bite and help.

I sugges that you remove all the plugs and use a small amount of diesel down the bores.
With the plugs removed you should be able to turn the engine over either by use of a spanner on the front pulley nut, or put the car in top gear and use a wheel to turn the engine, after jacking it off the floor.

If the engine will not move leave the diesel to soak the rings etc. overnight.

Of course you will be doing an oil change before running the engine wont you?

i know that a 1275 head(small valves) will fit on a smaller block but the valves will JUST clear the block so I should think that the opposite way round it should not be a problem!!
