After our recent mot we rec'd a letter from the dvla querying the number and could we send them the number as stamped on the car . Unfortunately our car no longer carries her vin plate so the only number we have is whats on the log book and what old mots we have . Has anybody else experienced a similar problem and if so what was the outcome ?

Hi
There is almost bound to be a stamped number somewhere else on the body/chassis.
Maybe Volvo owners club will have someone who can tell you where to find it.
It might even tell you in a workshop manual if you have one.

As far as we are aware the plate is positioned on the nearside inner wing and ours does not have on there . This as far as we are aware is the only place .

Agreed, my Aunt had the same problem after her (my dad's old) Morris Minor was MOT'd. She had to find the chassis plate and fill out a DVLA form with what it said and send it off. It was a one-digit discrepancy between the plate and V5. One of my A35's had a similar discrepancy, the V5 read "A2SS" as the chassis number prefix instead of "A2S5 which is what it should have said. It was never picked up on at the MOT though. I think a lot of the problems stem from when the DVLA system was computerised and some mistakes were made in the transferring of data to computer.

Hello Gilberry,
The type designation and chassis number are stamped on the cowl under the bonnet.Probably obscured by paint and may require sanding the area to find it.The exact location is shown in your handbook,if you have one,if not it is placed just above the heater box, close to the upper edge of the engine compartment and approximately in the centre of that area, below the windscreen.Hope this helps.Almost certain to require removal of paint to find it.
Regards

I knew I'd seen one on my last Amazon and have been racking my brains to remember where it was. Fortunately, I took a photo of my 122S' number before I sold it - it is stamped on the bulkhead, under the bonnet, just above the heater motor.

Upholstery, model type and colour codes are on a riveted plate.

RJ

[EDIT oldtimer just beat me to it!!!!! Smile]

Hello Rick and Gilberry
The plot thickens,I fear! It seems that this practice was not, perhaps used throughout the production run.I have two Volvo 120 hand books, one for my present 1968 estate where this information is clearly in evidence, the other for the handbook from a 1964 saloon in which there is no mention of this stamping on the bulkhead,as shown in Rick's photos, but only refers to the chassis plate located on the flat area above the two master cylinders. So it seems that itmuch depends on the year of the car whether the stamp is there or not.

Thanks for the replies , have found where it is stamped (on the bulkhead) but illegible because of the paint but having spoke to the dvla the discrepancy is because at the mot the tester added some 000's because he obviously felt the chassis number was not long enough .

Hi Richard, how did you get on with the DVLA, I have exactly the same problem where a "Z" on the chassis plate (correct for the vehicle) is represented as a "2" on the V5, and probably has been since the 70's!

Been there too on both classic and modern! Classic problem was caused by a "/" appearing in the chassis number at some time, Modern was caused by an accident repair replacing the panel on which the plate was riveted. These folk solved the latter problem, they are not cheap but they are a solution: www.vintagsuk.com

had the same too, its better to take a car for an mot with your v5 as the tester sometimes misreads or mis spaces the vin and then you get the dvla letter

I'll probably get one of these letters now as the MOT tester put my car down as an A30 instead of an A35, and couldn't find the chassis number full stop! I told him where it was and he said he'd have to carry out another test to change the details Rolling Eyes
