As an newbie to the joys of vintage caravanning I have over the last couple of years made an few minor blunders! These blunders relate mainly to the use of unsuited tow cars. My current combo is the Eccles, which you may have seen pictures of on this forum, now my tow car is an 1926 Vauxhall 14/40 saloon. Sadly the car has not quite enough grunt for the job, therefore I am selling the Vauxhall and wish to replace it with an more powerful vintage car. I have my eye on another Vauxhall, this time an 20/60 which I am assured by an fellow vintage caravanner that his own 20/60 is up to the job.
Anyone here use vintage for towing purposes and would you like to share those experiences here?

I will be a newbie as well with the caravan towing.I think i will get the caravan done first before my fire truck is done so i will be towing the caravan with my newish 2002 vauxhall so as i dont want to break the caravan in bits with the speed i think i will put her on a small trailer to take to shows.

Just to chip in with personal experience which is very limited, I have towed caravans with three classic car types:
pre-war 12hp Rileys - OK for vans up to about 15cwt gross, but watch out for the halfshafts!
post-war RM Riley 1½s - great with small vans (Thomson 10ft, Fawn) but only fair with Sable. Adequate, but not much in reserve.
post-war 2½ RM - very good towcar but the heaviest/largest vans pulled were Castleton Roadsman, Safari Four, and a Safari 15/4. No experience with vans bigger than these.
Not much help for the question re. vintage cars, but I am quite willing to test one out if Bayliss Thomas buys me one!

Thanks for input, I need to get my Eccles onto the weighbridge, its only 9'6'' long but seems mighty heavy for an tiddler! Made my 14hp Vauxhall gasp an bit. An experienced Vauxhall owner and vintage caravanner suggested use at least 20hp, seems good advise. Just curious how fellow vintage caravanserai's got on. Smile
