This may be waaaay out in the left field, however, I'm looking to find out if anybody has a contact for vehicle timber coachwork rebuilding / repair that would take on a c1890 steam fire engine?
The coachwork of this steamer has been damaged and the preservation group I'm with want to get it repaired as close to original as possible. I have been asked to investigate who's out there, but I know it'll be a very specialised field, but there must be people out there with the skills.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Scotty. |

Scotty,
There was probably/still is a guy in Kirkby Lonsdale who does wood frame restoration. His name is Ricky LLinares (maybe just one L) I used this guy years ago to redo the woodwork on my Jag. OR How about the guy who is doing Rdover's Alldays.

Hi
Whereabouts is rdover based?
He had the Alldays and Onions rebuilt and that is a timberbody.
Sorry 47, didn't notice you had already mentioned it. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

oooo, is it merryweather or a shand mason?
We need a pic or two!
I know someone very good at it, but he doesn't do any commercially, just his own.
Cheers

Thanks for these guys - they are very much appreciated.
rdover lives up here in the west of Scotland, but his restorer is down south in Darlington area if memory serves me correctly.
Buzzy - its a c1890 Merryweather "Greenwich" I believe, I'll post a picture pre-damage over the next day or two. |

Great, will look forward to it! Has it got a vertical or horizontal engine?
What type of boiler too?
Was this the one that Prestons had late last year?
Cheers

A good joinery shop should be able to make the parts you need. _________________ 1936 Morris 8 Series 1

Hi Buzzy,
Its a Merryweather "Gem", slightly smaller than a "Greenwich" I'm told.
With regard to your questions I'll have to find out, however it may take a few days - I'll do my best when I get a bit more time.
In the meantime here is the link to our web page on the steamer - Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Preservation Group
And once again, thanks guys for the interest and input. |

Hi Scotty
If you ever get up around Boat of Gartern way, there used to be a small appliance at the touring Caravan Park on Deshar Rd.
I think it was an old hand pump with nodding donkey type handles. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Hi
Cheers, any time, no rush, I just like steam as you know! Will have a look at the site now!
Edit:- Not the Prestons engine by the sounds.
Cheers

Hi
On a sidenote, I asked the local fire service presevation group, if I could join in and help them, after they advertised, looking for new members to help with the restoration/upkeep of their engines. I got one reply, eventually, to ring a number, on ringing that number the guy was so unhelpfull, it was untrue, so needless to say they don't have my services! hehe
Cheers

Not suprised Buzzy, as has been said in postings on other parts of the forum regarding the truck & bus museum & railway preservation they dont seem to like new blood. |

I was VERY disappointed to read Buzzy & Victor101's comments about volunteers.
I'm a (very) active Volunteer at www.trolleymuseum.org - Seashore Trollley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine, USA. We do everything we can to encourage participation & Membership from ANYONE, but especially from the younger age groups. We have Boy Scout, school & Junior Operator programs in place throughout the year.
& I'll bet any similiar organization will tell you the same thing!
You shouldn't have to, but perhaps you need to, find the right Volunteer to talk to - some of our Members & Volunteers simply don't have the knowledge or skills to be encouraging to enquiries. ALL the preservation societies are suffering from a lack of Volunteers & in particular from the younger generations - the material we offer has less relevance to them than it has to their parents.
Please don't give up! Find the Workshop Foreman, call the office & ask who is the best person to talk to - keep trying, it will be well worth it.
Mike
