Sorry to be annoying, but does anyone know how i can get the steering column out of an a40 farina mk1 (just the column not the box), if i take the top of the steering box off will the column just release by pulling it straight through (into the car) or is it a little more difficult as im doing this task on a friends car and dont want to destroy it (highly likely, without guidance , well im only 18 so what do you expect) any suggestions greatly recieved,

G'Day E. The colunmn tube is part of the box assembly, it will be fixed to the box, either by rivets or bolts, it would not serve any purpose to remove it as the bearings inside the box would probably dismantle themselves. The wheel is removable as are all the other fittings at the top of the column. Any more and the box has to come out.
What's the problem? |

Hi
The wheel will be held on by a nut underneath the wheel centre/horn, has that got a horn ring or a centre button?
Which ever it is it will be a prise out job.
If that has a column cover which is in 2 halves then that will either be held together by plastic lugs (prise apart along the join) or will be screwed together.
If it is just a box round the indicator stalk it is probably in 2 halves as in the above.
Once that is off you should see the clamp bolts/screws for the indicator switch. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

I think there may be a bigger problem here.
If the column has to be removed with the steering box attached, it won't go up through the bulkhead but the column won't come down through the bulkhead either if the switch and/or wheel are still attached.
I suspect that splitting the steering wheel nut and destroying the indicator switch might be the cheapest way round it. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

You might find drilling out the screws that attach the two halves of the metal switch housing together, is the easiest way to go, if they've been rounded off or chewed up. It should then separate from the column in two pieces, once you've disconnected the wiring.
Mk1 A40s had an indicator switch in the centre of the dash, not on the column. Usually on a Mk1 there is just the switch for the side/headlamps attached to the right side of the column, with just a blank casting on the lefthand side. That is unless the column-mounted indicator switch from a Mk2 has been fitted to the left side, opposite the light switch (I had that modification on my Mk1 for a while, until I found a replacement timer switch for the dash).
