I decided to have a run up to Edinburgh yesterday, about a hundred miles from my place in Northumberland,in my Volvo 120 estate. It was a beautiful day running up the 68 and 697 route, marred only by what some may consider a trivial matter but,I felt, a potentially dangerous one.In company with a few other vehicles we came to a series of signs indicating road works ahead, then countdown signs at 400 then 200 yards then warning of traffic lights. This appeared to be just beyond a bend. All were approaching with due care only to find no lights,no work in progress or any indication of any intent .The road was completely clear of any kind of obstruction and vehicles sorted themselves out and we continued for about two miles, encountered a repetition of the earlier signs, identical to the earlier ones, and eventually were confronted with another area devoid of any obstacles or hazards! We met another identical set a few miles further up which met with some scepticism but turned out genuine and found us somewhat unprepared I reckon |

That seems very extreme, but by no means unusual.
We are all conversant with the old tale of "Crying Wolf". All, that is, except a lot of Local Authorities.
I have always felt that there should be penalties for unnecessary/wrong signs.
One which really niggles me concerns the Number of "Ice" warning sigms in my area which stay in place 365 days of the year. After a while you cease to notice them or expect them exactly where all ice occurs.
So many signs seem to be trying to think for drivers like the ones which say "Bend max speed 30mph" (especially if they light up suddenly). Which is probably 20mph below an acceptable speed anyway. Ignoring bend speed limits is almost certain to follow. I certainly ignore them locally because I know the bends better than the instigator.
