Hi
Saw this in Barnard Castle on Saturday and it reminded me that we had a thread some time ago about old garages.
This one seems to have been modernised a while ago but is still serving petrol across the pavement.

That must be quite unique these days.......especially with the pump hoses hanging down like that.....I would have thought the 'worry wombles', sorry I mean the Health & Safety gang, would love that!!
Ive not seen one like that before, it's great |

That is wonderfully evocative of a way of life that's rapidly disappearing. If it wasn't so far away I'd drive up in the Aston just to fill up from those hoses. I'll bet you even get served by a chap in a brown warehouse coat. |

I used to see something like that back in the early 70's whilst on a camping holiday with my parents in Europe, as we traveled through small villages and towns, but never seen one here in England before, and certainly never thought there would be a working one here in the UK in 2010.
What a great photo, thanks for sharing it with us. _________________ Web links:1972 2000 SC P6

There was one in Beaconsfield, Bucks until recently, when I say recently I havent looked for a few years but it's probably a trendy wine bar now. Be neat if it was a coffee-bar for petrolheads but that wouldn't happen. |

What a fabulous place. Mind you, seen the prices for the fuel they are charging?
Obviously a bit of a premium for rarity! |

My dad grew up in Marlow and he remembers that garage, I'm sure he said it used to be a BL dealership?
My grandmother's 1976 Austin Maxi in Oyster Metallic they had around that time was purchased new from Mann Egerton of High Wycombe. _________________ Richard Hughes |

Hi
Found this oldish garage, in Ramsbottom, today, the pumps still have roller counters.

Hi
Saw this last Thrusday on the B4011 east of Malvern, between Guarlford and Rhydd.
Old maps doesn't show it as a garage and it is at the entrance to a farm, so it might have just been for the farms use, but you can see the Oil bin at the side and also the petroleum vapour warning sign seen at public garages.
The shed seems to appear on oldmaps from around 1904.

Hi
Gmaps doesn't provide any links.
https://goo.gl/maps/H8MruXefBW12
But Old Maps shows it as Fowlers Farm
https://goo.gl/maps/H8MruXefBW12
The PH to the west looks to be closed on Gmaps though there are cars on the car park to the rear but it is an old view. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

But where, and of what capacity, would the fuel tanks be? |

I've no idea of capacity, but the tanks would be set in concrete within the entrance of the Barnard Castle garage; the manhole covers over the Ramsbottom ones can be seen just in front of the pumps. The Fowlers Farm tank will presumably be beside the pump, hidden in the grass.
edit: I assume that's the tank vent just to the right of the pump. _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline
